We exit the alleyway behind Riven’s apartment and merge with the traffic of the street at the same time the second moon comes out from behind the clouds. The first klaxon sounds and my mind scrambles. “We need to find somewhere to stay for the night.”

“Please let it be somewhere with food.”

I look at Keyla and curse. “I’m sorry. This all started when you came to the food table. You never did get anything to eat.”

“You either. Aren’t you hungry too?”

“Now that I’m thinking about it, I am. Funny. While my life was exploding around me, I lost track of that.”

I guide her to the street, and we hop onto the last shuttle. The doors close behind us and the hum of the engine pulls us away from the curb.

“We’ll get as far away from here as we can in the time we have left. Then we’ll tuck away for the night.”

Keyla settles onto the bench beside me and releases my hand. She’s still got blood on her fingers and I realize she’s looking ragged—beautiful, but ragged.

“We can’t go anywhere they’d think to look based on knowing me. You should pick the place and I’ll make it happen.”

Keyla’s gaze flares wide. “I should pick? I’ve never been to this realm before.”

“Exactly my point. When we get off the train, you lead the way.”

We sit in silence for the next few blocks and the shuttle doesn’t stop. At this time of night, it doesn’t stop to let people on unless someone is standing on the platform or buzzes to get off.

When the second klaxon sounds, I stand and watch my city go by. It’s been years since I was able to be alone on the streets and I’ve missed it. After a few more blocks, I hit the button to stop. When the doors open, I step off and reach back to take Keyla’s hand.

It’s gratifying how easily she comes to me.

I lead her off the platform and over to the nearest line of buildings. “Alright, what do you think? Where do you think we should go?”

“Do you have hostels or drop-in centers for people without homes or money?”

“They’re run by the queen and her men. We’d have to scan in. You won’t scan and I can’t.”

She looks around for a moment and points to where three people have flipped up a service cover and are climbing down into the underground. “What’s that?”

“That’s an access point to the city underground.”

“Who are those people?”

“I don’t know. Citizens who don’t have a place to live above ground?”

“Are they violent citizens?”

“No. Just poor, displaced, or those who choose not to live on the grid of the city.”

She nods. “Then that’s where we’ll go. After all, we’re poor and displaced at the moment.”

I shake my head. “But you’re the Prime Princess of your realm. Why would you want to go down there, let alone plan to sleep down there?”

“Because people who don’t have much are often the most understanding of hard times. The citizens down there won’t be Laryssa collaborators.
